Access mysql database hosted on remote server using phpMyAdmin

Last week, for one of my projects, I had to access a database which was hosted on remote server and there was no phpMyAdmin installed on that server. As I am an avid user of phpMyAdmin and quite familiar with it, I wanted to access the remote database server using phpMyAdmin only. I knew that phpMyAdmin does give a facility to access database on remote server and it was just a matter of configuration to make it work. When we access http://localhost/phpmyadmin it connects to the local mysql server by default.

To make it connect to other servers you can follow the following steps:

Go to phpMyAdmin directory in your server installation (c:\wamp\phpmyadmin, in my case)

Open config.inc.php file and find

$cfg[‘Servers’] = array();
$i = 1

Below this the configuration of localhost would be provided. All the details of the localhost is given by
$cfg[‘Servers’][$i][‘variable_name’] = ‘value_of_the_variable’;

Many of the variables are defined like that.

Find the value declaration for localhost (mostly the last one would be $cfg['Servers'][$i]['AllowDeny']['rules'] = array();)

Then below this line we need to add the details for the another server we want to connect. We don’t need to repeat all the variables declared for localhost. Only those which are required should be declared for the server we are going to add.

We’ll have to increase the count $i and then give values.

<?php
$i
++;
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host']          = '';            // MySQL hostname or IP address
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['port']          = '';          // MySQL port - leave blank for default port
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['socket']        = '';          // Path to the socket - leave blank for default socket
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['connect_type']  = 'tcp';       // How to connect to MySQL server ('tcp' or 'socket')
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['extension']     = 'mysql';     // The php MySQL extension to use ('mysql' or 'mysqli')
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['compress']      = FALSE;       // Use compressed protocol for the MySQL connection (requires PHP >= 4.3.0)
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type']     = 'config';    // Authentication method (valid choices: config, http, signon or cookie)
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user']          = 'root';         // MySQL user
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']      = '';            // MySQL password (only needed with 'config' auth_type)
?>

Provide appropriate information for the server above.

Now change the value of $cfg['ServerDefault'] to 0. So that when you will open phpmyadmin it will ask you to select the server.

If you will set $cfg['ServerDefault'] = 1; then by default localhost will open.

If you set $cfg['ServerDefault'] = 2; then by default remote database will open.

Did you find this helpful??? No-> Sorry to waste your time and efforts of reading. Yes -> Glad to know that :-)

"This computer does not support the required audio compression format" - Yahoo! Messenger Error

Yahoo! Messenger voice chatRecently I got a new Dell Studio 1555 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium and this time I chose to try out Vista rather than replacing it with Windows XP. (It is running slow but still I am happy with its graphics and user interface. )

Coming to the point, after installing Yahoo! Messenger I tried to log into chat rooms and I could get into chat rooms but Voice option was disabled. Then once I went into a conference and again voice option was disabled and it was popping up the error “This computer does not support the required audio compression format.” Now this was something new for me. I am a chat bug for last 4 years and I never encountered this error so I was bit surprised to see that.

Finding the error, the first thing I usually do is search about it on Google and I did the same this time too. I could find that I was getting the error because required audio codec, DSP True Speech, was missing. Actually, Windows Vista has deprecated this codec and Yahoo! Messenger still uses it for Voice chat so it was obvious to get an error.

Problem was identified. Next step : Find the solution. Again, go to Google! Search for DSP True Speech download and got thousands of link. I was lucky to find
http://www.bytescribe.com/downloads/tsp_codec_install.exe in the very first effort. I downloaded it, installed it and restarted my lappy. Wooohhhhh !!!! After re-boot the voice chat was enabled and I could enjouy it in the Chat rooms and Conference as well.

Enjoy this if you are facing the same problem in Windows Vista

Problem : “This computer does not support the required audio compression format” Yahoo Messenger Voice chat error. Unable to use Voice chat feature in Chat rooms and Conference.

Solution : Install DSP True speech codec for vista.

Link to download codec : http://www.bytescribe.com/downloads/tsp_codec_install.exe

Conclusion : Enjoy voice chat!!! ;-)

Hello World!

Again, after a long time I am back to blog on my site. Actually, there is nothing special to mention in this blog but to say "HELLO WORLD!"

I was pretty busy in last couple of months that I couldn't spare much time to blog on my site but now I think I must be regular to blog. Meanwhile I had many ideas and thoughts about blogging on various topics and events but either my laziness or my carelessness never let my enthusiasm overcome. Hence, I had to run my site without new content. Anyways, as I already mentioned in earlier blog "it's never too late" so I am back, hopefully, to bang.

I think now I am going to blog about general topics, interesting forwarded e-mails and some technical stuff related to PHP/MYSQL and Drupal. Many times at work I find interesting solutions to the problem people generally face in programming. So I am planning to share my ideas/solutions on those technical problems. Let's see how does it go.

Soon, I am going to add Photo Gallery and Links section on my site. In Photo Gallery I will share my favorite pictures and pics from my trips. In links I will share URLs of useful resources I find while surfing net. Not sure when these features will be added but hoping to update the site ASAP.

Thank you all!!!

Drupal developers required in Ahmedabad

Hello All,
This is Mittal Patel, a computer engineer from Ahmedabad. I have been into web development for last 3 years and currently I am working as a freelance Drupal developer and PHP/Drupal consultant at Regius IT Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

Currently I (along with Regius IT Solutions) have many projects to be developed in drupal and due to shortage of time I am not able to cope up with all the requirements. So I am looking for Drupal developers based at Ahmedabad who can work with me. I can offer freelance work, part time employement or full time employement depending upon your preference.

All I want to have is to find experienced Drupal developers who have previously developed custom modules or themes. (Those who are just familiar with using Drupal can also contact but please let me know your expertise level in advanced. Please don't claim you are expert at Module/Theme development unless you have really done so. )

Kindly contact me at admin@mittalpatel.co.in for further inquiries and discussion.

Thank you

Use filters in Gmail to organize your mails

GmailIf you are an avid user of Gmail then you must have come across the question : How to create folders in gmail? I have heard many asking the same question and to all of their disappointment, there isn’t folder creation in Gmail. Gmail says it prefers Labels over Folders to organize your mails and notes some specific advantages of Labels too. Read here. I have seen people struggling to figure out how they can leverage maximum benefits using Labels to keep their inbox neat and clean.

Most of the people struggle with using Labels because it is new and even if you add Label to any mail, unlike moving to Folder, the mail will be in Inbox only with Label prefixed to it. Users think what is the benefit of using Labels if the mail remains in Inbox forever. The solution is you should Label the mail and then archive it. So it will be removed from you inbox and to check that mail either you can go to All Mails or simply go to Label you have added to that mail.

Another nice trick I found today to keep gmail inbox clean and organizing all the mails charmingly is to use Filters. Go to Settings and click on Filters tab to access filter settings. Now, click on Add new filter. There are various criteria you can filter your mails based on. ( I use From.) Give e-mail id of the sender you want to create filter for and click Next Step. On the next page, check Skip the inbox and also check Apply the label ( Select a label from drop down box or create a new one). Near to Create Filter button there would be a check box with message “ Also apply filter to *** conversations below”. Check this box if you want all the mails from that sender to be replaced from inbox to label. Finally, click on Create Filter and you are done.

Attitude - Dare to challenge yourself

A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and ask him for a Phone Call.Shop-owner replied sweetly this is no a STD, but you can do one call.

The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation:
The boy asked, "Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?
The woman replied, "I already have someone to cut my lawn."
"Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now." replied boy.
The woman responded that she was very satisfied with the person who was presently cutting her lawn.
The little boy found more perseverance and offered, "Lady, I'll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of North-Palm beach, Florida."
Again the woman answered in the negative.
With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver.
The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy and said," Son... I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job."
The little boy replied, "No thanks, I was just checking my performance with the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady, I was talking to!"

4 hours of reliance = 45 hours of common man

Frustration gets at peak when I can’t access my internet for longer. Especially when I am in Ahmedabad and internet isn’t working due to some technical or other problem.

I missed to pay the bill of my internet connection as I was busy with preparation of my exam(TOEFL). On the very same day when exam got over, I couldn’t access my net. Internet connection was suspended due to non-payment of the bill. Ok, it was my mistake, I accepted. I ran to near by reliance web world and paid the necessary amount at 5 o’clock in the evening. To my happiness, the cash recipient lady informed that internet connection would be activated again within half an hour (wow, I was sooo delighted.)

My clock was running well. Even after two hours of wait, the situation was same. So I called reliance customer care to know what was going on. I could know that amount was received, bill was paid and I was supposed to wait for 4 hours to get my connection re-activated (Ok, here half an hour turned into 4 hours.) Another 2 hours of wait, still no result, no difference. I went crazy, again visited the reliance web world to discuss the problem. And I got very irresponsible answer that internet in our area was facing some problem. Actually there was nothing like that because my friend who use the same connection was surfing net at full speed.

I contacted customer care again at around 10. Still, no good response. Same answer, wait and watch, it will be resolved soon. The next day was Sunday. I kept contacting customer care on regular interval but it wasn’t my day. They raised complain again, told me to wait for 4 hours but I guess their 4 hours were never ending. I was clueless what was going on. It was really irritating that I couldn’t surf net for more than 24 hours and to my bad luck that irritation was to last one more night.

w000000t !!!!! Gujju always roCkS!!!!

Bill Gates organized an enormous session to recruit a new Chairman for Microsoft Europe. 5000 candidates assembled in a large room. One candidate is Kantibhai Shah.

Bill Gates: Thank you for coming. Those who do not know JAVA may leave. 2000 people leave the room. Kantibhai says to himself, 'I do not know JAVA but I have nothing to lose if I stay. I'll give it a try'

Bill Gates: Candidates who never had experience of managing more than 100 people may leave. 2000 people leave the room. Kantibhai says to himself ' I never managed anybody by myself but I have nothing to lose if I stay. What can happen to me?' So he stays.

Bill Gates: Candidates who do not have management diplomas may leave. 500 people leave the room. Kantibhai says to himself, 'I left school at 15 but what have I got to lose?' So he stays in the room.

Lastly, Bill Gates asked the candidates who do not speak Serbo - Croat to leave. 498 people leave the room. Kantibhai says to himself, ' I do not speak one word of Serbo - Croat but what do I have to lose?' So he stays and finds himself with one other candidate.

Everyone else has gone. Bill Gates joined them and said 'Apparently you are the only two candidates who speak Serbo - Croat, so I'd now like to hear you have a conversation together in that language.' Calmly, Kantibhai turns to the other candidate and says `kem chho?' The other candidate answers 'ek dam majama..'
